We love pickles, and for years we searched through catalogs and trialed pickling cuke varieties only to never quite be satisfied with what we found. The wrong texture, too shy or too spread out yields, bitter ends…we are fussy, and we’re OK with that, because we are also patient. That made the discovery of this little German pickler all that much sweeter. A little different than your typical American pickler, these have a dimpled bumpy skin at pickling stage. The name is a mouthful, the vines are heavy producers, the cukes snappy-crisp, and the flavor fresh and never bitter. The first pickler from more than a dozen trialed over the years that we found worthy of production for sale. These discoveries make us happy.
55-60 days. Crunchy with a bright, lemony, almost pickled cucumber taste, they grow on tall, 6-8’ vines covered with lovely little leaves. Profusions of smooth-skinned 1-2” little green and white speckled watermelon-looking and shaped fruit (think, fairy watermelons!) take hold quickly and are easily gathered from the ground where they fall when most ripe. They are delicious eaten raw, added to salsa and salads, as well as pickled or eaten as a juicy snack. Additionally, in warmer climates (or greenhouses grown in the north), plants produce edible tubers that are similar in appearance to crosnes or Chinese artichokes. Dr. Brandon Iker of Grand Rapids, MI who brought this to our attention (and provided the root picture) describes the taste as "cucumber-corn-radishes... sweet starchy and crunchy". Typically harvested when rather small, in the 4-5” range, it is light green and sweet with a wholesome crunch, bright flavor and very few seeds. The plants are uniform and productive, putting out loads of straight, skinny cucumbers that have long been a crowd-pleaser. Çengelköy is excellent for pickling and general snacking, but most importantly for preparing a simple Turkish breakfast with your friends on a ferry as you dream of Istanbul: “I’m pretty sure it was a cucumber, a crunchy çengelköy cucumber, that hooked me on Istanbul. That cuke - allied with a briny slab of feta-like beyaz peynir cheese, crinkly olives, and simit, a dense sesame-crusted bread ring – was my breakfast on a windswept deck of a commuter ferry crossing the Bosphorous…” – Anya von Bremzen, Saveur 2016. They belong to a class of cucurbits, including the perhaps better known "Armenian cucumber," which are botanically melons but are eaten immature, at which point they taste (and are used) very similar to cucumbers. The cultivation of Caroselli and other "cucumber-melons" predates true cucumbers in the Mediterranean region, and many countries have versions that date back to antiquity. They come in a diversity of shapes and colors: round, elongated, ribbed, striped, fuzzy or smooth, light or dark green. Many are specific to the small geographic area they come from, and a couple are listed with Slow Food's "Ark of Taste". This particular variety is known as Leccese Light Green, named after the historic city of Lecce, one of the most important population centers in the region, from where it comes. Plump, light green, cylindrical fruits are refreshingly crisp with a flavor not too dissimilar from a classic cucumber but with a finer, almost-but-not-quite summer squash-like texture, thinner skin, and perhaps slight undertones of its melon family kin. Carosello evangelist Jay Tracy of the Cucumber Shop in Fairfield, CA, shared this strain with us. Because they are eaten "immature," they are harvested on a similar timeline to cucumbers, and multiple successions can even be grown in a single season. First plantings should go in, however, when you would plant other melon varieties. Since people will invariably ask, fully ripe melons are rather bland and unremarkable.
50-60 days.
