They trace back through Horace Pippin, one of the most influential American artists of the first half of the 20th century, a self-taught painter whose work spans subjects of war, racial segregation, landscape, and portraiture. Fortunately for us, his legacy is also a window into the culinary and agricultural tradition of the Black community of the Philadelphia and Baltimore area during that time period, as he was an avid seed collector. These along with several other varieties (some like the "Fish" pepper are now widely available) were discovered in the basement freezer of William Woys Weaver's grandfather after his death. Pippin had traded seeds with Weaver's grandfather in exchange for "bee sting therapy" for a war injury to his arm. William Woys Weaver, a well-known seedsman and food historian, grew out the seeds and made them, and importantly, their stories, available through his Roughwood Seed Collection, from which their popularity has spread. Thin-walled peppers don't seem to be a particularly appreciated trait in the US, where the vast majority of peppers are eaten either in salads or as the pepper equivalent of carrot sticks, but we've grown quite fond of them and find them much more appropriate in a variety of culinary contexts.
Mehmet tells us this pepper is most commonly used as a breakfast pepper in Turkey and is sometimes even marketed as "kahvaltılik" (meaning "for breakfast") at grocers and farmers' markets. Breakfast is an important meal in Turkey and is heavily tilted toward the savory side of things: olives, cheese, eggs, sucuk (dried spicy beef sausages), tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, fresh bread or simit (a circular bread encrusted with sesame seeds), jams and savory spreads. The practice originates from historically lean times when poor rural populations sought out sources of winter-time nourishment. Plants that produced a core of edible greens in the coldest months of the year when brought inside barns and cellars became food of necessity. Ironically many have now come to be thought of as gourmet culinary treasures like Belgian endive, Treviso Tardivo, and Rosa di Gorizia. The first Italian vegetable to gain IGP, a European-protected status for special food products specific to a place of origin (similar to many wines and cheeses) radicchio, Treviso tardivo was celebrated with a producers exhibition in 1900 which, interrupted only by wartime years, has been held every year since. Use raw in salads, grilled, roasted, or sautéed with risotto or pasta. A true source of joy.

While some strains of tardivo produce a blanched core even in the field setting, we strongly encourage you to take the extra step of forcing which produces the most tender midribs and unquestionably superior eating quality. It is worth the additional effort.
80-90 days from transplant + forcing time. Just because you like a variety for mid-season production doesn't mean you can move the planting date forward for an earlier harvest and expect the same quality and harvest results. The best way to achieve earlier harvests is by growing earlier maturing varieties while keeping your planting date relatively stable, and 'Sangria' is perfectly suited to bring in the first Treviso-type harvests of the season. While slightly smaller than the mid and late varieties, it has perfect shape and full density early in the season

The city of Treviso is one of the epicenters of radicchio production, and Rosso di Treviso Precoce is one of the best known types in Italy, second only to Rosso di Chioggia in terms of amount produced. "Precoce" means "early" in Italian and is used here to differentiate it from the late fall/winter forced-type, Treviso Tardivo. It is relatively unfussy to grow producing dense vertically elongated heads with wine-red leaves and wide contrasting white mid-ribs for fall harvests. It has the mildest bitterness of any of the red heading radicchio types, and though it is very much at home in a raw salad preparation, it is widely considered a type for sauteing, grilling, and roasting in Italy. Much of the plants sweetness that compliments the bitterness is found in the midrib. As with all radicchio, be especially mindful of your planting dates as a successful crop requires a MUCH narrower planting window than most garden vegetables.

About the named varieties... For most vegetables, in order to provide a continuous harvest over a long period of time, growers stagger planting dates throughout the season which in turn provides a continuous harvest as the plants mature to eating stage. With radicchio, a different strategy is employed. For the most part, the majority of heading radicchio is best suited to seeding around the summer solstice (transplanting in the second-third week of July). To achieve a longer harvest period, rather than staggering planting dates, breeders have developed different varieties within a type with different days-to-maturity harvests. These are often referred to as "slots" with many types having early, mid, and late slotted varieties.

65-70 days from transplant

Packet: 100 seeds

[split]

Growing Info

Please visit our Radicchiology page for radicchio growing info!
