Maude and Tom Powell of Wolf Gulch Farm who grew some seed for us had this to say about it: “We loved growing this tomato! The plants were abundant producers of very large, meaty, 1lb+ fruits. What really stands out is the color – a sunset orange with red marbling, amazing to look at when sliced. The flavor is also outstanding, somewhat fruity. Great for sandwiches, but we also dried and made sauce with them. It reminded us of Striped German, one of our all-time favorites, but was more productive.” First introduced in 1921 as Ruby Gold in John Lewis Child’s (credited with founding one of, if not the first seed catalog business in the United States) catalog it was later renamed Gold Medal by Ben Quisenberry in his 1976 catalog. Mr. Quisenberry operated Big Tomato Gardens and was passionate about saving heirloom tomato seeds from extinction. This large tomato does benefit from the extra heat of being grown under cover in cooler areas. Indeterminate.
90 days. Beautiful, perfectly round, small 4-5 oz fruits are bright orange on the outside and often have a reddish blush in the flesh. Fruits hang in cherry tomato-like trusses on medium-sized very prolific plants with an open habit. The flavor is bright in acidity and juicy—our most reliable and productive non-cherry field tomato. Looking back over our sales, I have noticed that this is among our least popular varieties in the past few years, which means we are not doing it justice in our descriptions. It was second only to Carbon in a taste test a few years ago and is one of only 2 or 3 tomatoes we grow yearly, no matter what. A relatively new variety bred by Fred Hempel of Artisan Organics in Sunol, CA (with his then 8yo son in an advisory role), Blush set the bar high for beauty and flavor. The elongated (2.5”), cherry to saladette-sized fruits boast yellow skin with red marbling that gets more pronounced as the season goes on. Even with long hangtime, the thick flesh remains firm, giving a very satisfying toothsome and never mealy bite. The flavor is fabulously sweet, fruity, and complex. Many who have followed us over the years know that we are especially picky about plant architecture. We found blush to have dense foliage, excellent trusses, and a uniform, robust growth habitat that lends itself well to two-leader, Florida weave staking. Vertically sliced cross sections are works of art. Its a bit slenderer and a shier producer than its sibling 'Taiga', but its sweetness is off the charts and its flavor a bit brighter (neither superior, just different). The flesh is meaty with few seeds and excellent texture. The potato leaf plants showed very little fruit cracking in a season where many of our tomatoes struggled with this.
Oxheart types grow slightly differently than many of our favorite tomatoes, requiring a different strategy to maximize harvests. Rather than a strong central stem and abundant foliage that lends itself to more common two-leader pruning and "florida weave" style trellising, most oxhearts display slender willowy leaders, sparse leaf coverage, and many suckers that we only very minimally prune to prevent sun scald and maximize fruit yield.
80 days, Indeterminate.
